It is one of the best-loved plants in the home, but caring for bougainvillea in autumn has its own rules, and we often do exactly the opposite of what it needs. Here is what to do now, what to leave for later and, while we are at it, a couple of curiosities that will surprise you.

The key to understanding bougainvillea in autumn is simple: from October the plant goes dormant. It has spent months giving colour non-stop and now it slows down. If we treat it as if it were the height of summer, we wear it out; if we go along with its rest, in spring it pays us back many times over.

Bougainvillea in autumn goes dormant

With shorter days and milder temperatures, bougainvillea in autumn slows its growth. It puts out fewer new shoots and uses much less water. It is not sick or sad: it is saving its strength.

That change of pace is what shapes all the care at this time of year. Less watering, no fertiliser, maintenance pruning only and a little protection if the cold bites. Let’s take it step by step.

Pruning bougainvillea in autumn: gentle now, the hard prune in February or March

It is the most common mistake with bougainvillea in autumn: the plant looks untidy and you feel like going at it with the shears. Better not. Bougainvillea flowers on new growth, so a hard prune now leaves the plant without the wood that would later flower and, on top of that, exposed just as the cold arrives.

What you can do with bougainvillea in autumn is a light tidy-up:

Remove dry or broken branches, which add nothing and spoil the look of the plant.

Trim any branch that gets in the way of a door, a window or a path.

Train the long stems towards the wall, railing or pergola where you want it to grow.

The big prune, the one that shapes the plant and encourages flowering, waits until February or March. That is when the plant comes out of dormancy, sprouts strongly and those new branches fill with colour.

Watering bougainvillea in autumn: less water and no fertiliser

It is resting now, and a dormant plant does not need the same water as in August. Water bougainvillea in autumn only when the soil is dry and space out the waterings little by little. Waterlogging is far more dangerous at this time of year than a lack of water: the soil takes longer to dry and the roots feel it.

The same goes for fertiliser. Feeding it now pushes the plant to put out tender shoots that the cold can damage, and takes energy away from it when what it needs is rest. Save the fertiliser for spring, when it starts growing again and can really make use of it.

A little thirst makes it flower more

Here comes one of the best-kept secrets of this plant: a little thirst makes it flower more. Bougainvillea responds to a certain shortage of water by focusing its energy on producing colour, while generous watering encourages it to put out leaves and branches instead of flowers.

So if your bougainvillea in autumn looks very green and has few flowers, do not give it more water thinking you are helping. Keep watering to the minimum and let the soil dry out between waterings. That is exactly what it likes.

Protect bougainvillea in autumn from frost

Bougainvillea does not like frost. On the Cádiz coast, with its mild winters, there are rarely problems, but it is worth keeping an eye on it on the coldest nights and in inland areas.

If you have it in a pot, it is easy: move it against a south-facing wall. The wall soaks up the sun’s heat during the day and gives it back at night, and it also shields the plant from the wind. If it is planted in the ground, a sunny wall behind it is already half the protection. And if you are thinking of planting a new one, remember that autumn is a good time to do it: we explain why in our article on planting in autumn.

The pink part is not the flower: they are bracts

Now for the curiosities. What we all call the bougainvillea flower, that intense pink that covers façades, is not the flower. They are bracts: modified leaves that the plant colours to attract attention.

The real flower is the little white trumpet peeking out from the centre of each cluster of bracts. Small, discreet and easy to miss. The next time you look at your bougainvillea in autumn, get close and look for it: hardly anyone notices it.

From Brazil to Cádiz, with a traveller in disguise

Bougainvillea comes from Brazil and owes its name to the navigator Bougainville. But the most surprising story is not his, it belongs to someone who travelled on his expedition: Jeanne Baret, the first woman known to have sailed around the world. And she did it disguised as a man.

So every time you walk past a patio covered in bougainvillea, remember that the plant carries a story of navigators, voyages around the world and a woman who broke every rule of her time to make the journey. Not bad for a balcony plant.

Your bougainvillea, ready for spring

If you sum it up in a few ideas, caring for bougainvillea in autumn is more about letting it be than stepping in: gentle pruning, less water, no fertiliser and a sheltered corner if the cold bites. With that, when spring comes you will have a rested plant ready to cover itself in colour again.

And if you have questions about your bougainvillea in autumn, or you want to take a new one home for your patio or balcony, drop by our garden centre in Chiclana. If the branches are still flexible and green inside, the plant is fine: it will sprout again when temperatures rise.

Can I keep a bougainvillea in a pot all year round?

Yes, as long as the pot drains well and the plant gets plenty of sun. In a pot it is more sensitive to cold and to too much water, so keep an eye on watering and find it a sheltered spot in winter.

Where should I put a new bougainvillea?

In the sunniest corner you have and with something to lean on: a wall, a railing or a pergola. It is a climber that loves light and warmth, so the more sun it gets, the more colour it will give you.

From October, bougainvillea goes dormant: gentle pruning, less watering and no fertiliser.
