Planting in autumn is the secret few people take advantage of: what happens underground in these weeks gives your future plant a head start. We tell you all about it from our nursery in Chiclana.

The idea is simple. In spring we look at leaves and flowers, but what decides whether a plant thrives is its root. And the root has its own calendar, which does not match ours.

The soil is still warm and the air is no longer harsh

At the end of September the soil keeps the heat built up over the summer, but the air is no longer as harsh as in July or August. That combination is gold for roots: they get going quickly without suffering heat stress.

Think of it this way. A freshly planted root needs to explore the soil, take hold and start absorbing water. With mild soil, that work goes fast. And as the sun no longer punishes the leaves so much, the plant does not lose water from above faster than the root can replace it. It is the exact opposite of what happens if you plant in high summer, when the top of the plant suffers while the root has not yet had time to settle.

That is why planting in autumn greatly reduces the well-known transplant stress: the plant reaches its permanent spot at the moment the soil welcomes it best.

Autumn rain does the watering for you

The second advantage comes from the sky. Autumn rains are just around the corner, which means less hand watering and a plant that hydrates itself, naturally.

It is another good reason for planting in autumn: rainwater soaks the soil more evenly than the hose and reaches deeper layers. That way the root learns to look for moisture further down instead of staying at the surface, something it will appreciate when the heat returns.

Careful, though: that does not mean forgetting about it altogether. In the first weeks after planting in autumn it is worth keeping an eye on the soil: if days go by without rain and the soil dries out, a top-up watering helps the root finish settling in. If you are unsure about the amount, in our guide to watering plants in summer we explain how to check soil moisture with your finger, a trick that works just as well in any season.

Planting in autumn gives the root a 2-3 month head start

This is the key to it all. Planting now gives the root 2-3 months to settle before the real cold. During that time, even if on the outside the plant seems to be doing very little, on the inside it is building its foundation.

When spring arrives, it is ready to grow strong. Instead of spending its first energy on putting down roots, it can devote it to producing leaves, branches and flowers. That is why, when planting in autumn, the plant usually looks better in spring than another of the same species planted in March.

On the Cádiz coast, with its mild winters, planting in autumn makes even more sense, because the root rarely has to stop for hard frosts.

Which plants are worth planting in autumn

The general rule works for almost anything that will stay in the ground or in a large pot for years:

Ornamental trees and shrubs: they benefit the most, because their roots need time to explore the soil.

Mediterranean plants and herbs: rosemary, lavender or sage settle in without hurry before the following summer.

Perennials and ground cover: they reach spring with the clump already formed.

Spring-flowering bulbs: they are planted at precisely this time of year so they flower when temperatures rise.

And if you have a plant that has outgrown its pot, it is also a good time to move it to a bigger one or into the garden. In this article we explain the signs that your plant needs repotting.

Less work for you, more guarantees for the plant

Put it all together and planting in autumn means less work for you and more guarantees for the plant: mild soil, less heat, rain that waters for you and months of head start for the root.

And if the plant comes fresh from the nursery, even better. A plant that arrives fresh and well cared for in its new spot starts out with healthy, active roots, ready to make the most of the window. Pots benefit from the same effect, although the soil in a pot cools and dries out sooner than garden soil. Use a good compost, make sure the drainage hole does not get waterlogged with the rain and place the pot somewhere bright.

Should I feed right after planting?

There is no need to force it. What matters in these weeks is that the root settles; heavy feeding pushes the plant to produce tender shoots just before the cold. It is better to wait until spring, when it starts growing strongly.

What if I am late and the cold has already arrived?

If you are going to be planting in autumn, the sooner you do it, the more time the root will have to settle. If you are running late, ask us at the nursery: we will tell you which plants cope best with later planting and how to protect them.

Soil still warm, milder air and rain just around the corner: why planting now gives the root a 2-3 month head start before the cold.

Planting in autumn gives the root 2-3 months to settle before the cold: warm soil, less watering and a plant ready to grow strong in spring.
[274
252,322,319,321,320,146
post-4390","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-losteflor-nursery","tag-chiclana","tag-jardin","tag-plantar-en-otono","tag-raices","tag-trasplante","tag-vivero
["GET
